The Six Traits: A K-12 Resource to Support Writing Instruction

  • The Six Traits resource is a supportive guide for teaching the writing process through the six traits of good writing: ideas, organization, word choice, sentence fluency, voice and conventions.

The resource establishes a shared vocabulary, a means of providing authentic feedback, and criteria for defining proficiency in writing.

The key tenets of the resource are as follows:

    • Reading aloud and discussing writing samples
    • Using writing models
    • Revising writing
    • Writing frequently
