North Street Elementary School

To prepare all students to be life-long learners and responsible citizens

Principal's Update -January 8, 2017

  • Anticipated Spring MCAS Dates

    MCAS

    Dear Families,

Although it's hard to believe, we are approaching the official halfway point of the school year, the 90th day.  Each year around this time we take time to envision the second half of the year.  One component of that process is scheduling our annual MCAS testing.  The state of Massachusetts provides a clear range of dates for out testing to take place.  All of our dates for testing are provided in the notice below.

    MCAS Dates and Information

For the second time, all students in Massachusetts will take the updated version of the MCAS. This recently updated assessment, Next Generation MCAS, blends various question types and specifically targets state standards. A key component of the Next Generation assessment is to provide students with a computer based format. This spring, only our 4th and 5th graders at NSS will take the computer based test. All other grades will complete a paper based model. Beginning next year in 2019, all grades will be required to complete the computer based model. Information on this year’s state testing and the development of the Next Generation MCAS can be found on the Department of Education’s website: http://www.doe.mass.edu/mcas/parents.

Please try to avoid any appointments or trips that will prevent your child from attending school during his or her testing dates. In the event your child is absent, he/she will make-up the test they missed either on the day they return to school or at a scheduled make-up date.

Best wishes for a great week ahead,

    ~ Mr. Wiltshire

    ABSENCES:
    Sick
As we move through the winter months we anticipate an increase in student absences.  When calling your child out due to sickness, please always contact the main office.  During school hours our office team will answer your call.  Prior to school hours, please use our absence line to report your child's absence.  Do not contact your child's teacher.  We appreciate your support in making our attendance procedures efficient as we do follow up on each child that does not attend school.

    WINTER RECESS:
     recess

As part of the North Street philosophy we believe that outdoor play each day is essential to student learning and development. In fact, many teachers provide a short, second recess time as a movement break.  Playing outside provides an opportunity for students to grow socially, revitalize their minds for learning, and exercise. However, we are also aware that winter weather can bring unsafe conditions for our students.

The temperature cut-off for outdoor recess is set at a "real feel" temperature of 20 degrees, which factors in wind chill. However, please know that in addition to temperature, school staff also take into account the safety and condition of the recess area.

Finally, we encourage students to play in the snow, if any arrives, as long as they have met the "Show Me 5" rule. In order for students to play in the snow they are required to have the following 5 items:
    Boots
    Snow Pants
    Coat
    Gloves
    Hat
